FIRE RESISTANT CABLES FAQS (Frequent asked questions)

Fire-resistant cables can withstand fire conditions, allowing them to continue to operate even in the event of a fire. This is crucial for safety in buildings and infrastructure, as they help ensure that emergency systems, such as alarms and lighting, remain operational during a fire. Fire-resistant cables are commonly used in in public places such as: hospitals, tunnels, offices, production plants, laboratories, hotels, etc.

The Construction Product Regulation (CPR) lays down harmonized conditions for the marketing of construction products in the EU. This is achieved by providing a “common technical language” offering uniform methods to assess the performance of construction products and to compare the performance of products from different manufacturers in different countries.
These methods are compiled in harmonised standards or technical specifications. This common technical language is to be applied by:
• The manufacturers when declaring the performance of their products, but also by
• The authorities of Member States when specifying requirements for them, and by
• Their users (architects, engineers, constructors…) when choosing the products most suitable for their intended use in construction works.
Further information can be found here.

The standards that validate the fire resistance and Functional Integrity of our cables are EN 50200 and IEC 60331-2 (minimum 120 minutes at 840ºC), EN 50362 and IEC 60331-1 (minimum 180 minutes at 950ºC, category C) and BS6387 (category C,W & Z). Our cables are also certified according to NBN C30-004.

Fire resistant cables are a specific type of electrical cable designed to maintain its Functional Integrity during a fire for a certain period of time. Their purpose is to provide electrical power to critical equipment such as emergency light, smoke extractors, sprinklers, water pumps, fire fighting equipments and alarm systems in emergency situations.

Fire resistant cables are commonly installed in safety systems (emergency lights, smoke extractors, sprinklers, water pumps, fire fighting equipments and alarm systems) in all premises open to the public such as: airports, arenas, concert halls, department stores, offices, hotels. Its use is a must in and critical services such as tunnels, data centres, hospitals, etc.

The maximum temperature that fire resistant cables can withstand typically ranges from 90°C to 120°C under normal operating conditions. However, during a fire, they are designed to maintain functionality at higher temperatures, often up to 950°C for a limited duration, depending on the specific type and standards of the cable. It’s important to check the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact ratings of a particular cable.

At Top Cable we have our own laboratories where we carry out all kinds of standarized tests on our cables, including fire resistance tests. You can find out more details in this post on our blog.

Fire-resistant cables maintain its Functional Integrity during a fire for a certain period of time, while fire retardant cables focus on slowing down flame spread. Both play important roles in fire safety, but they serve different purposes! Both are low smoke and halogen free: in the event of fire. f you have more questions about this topic, feel free to ask!

Low smoke halogen free (LSZH) cables have been designed to provide maximum protection to people and equipment in the event of fire. They are specially recommended for:
. Hospitals
. Offices, Universities, Schools
. Malls, Supermarkets, Shops in general, museums
. Trains.
. Ships, Submarines.
. Railway, road, & tunnel systems.
. Nuclear power stations
and much more.
